This mystical, magical musical comedy-farce with book and lyrics by “Image Award” Winner, Charles Douglass, is loosely based on the Moliere classic, "The Doctor In Spite Of Himself". This story takes place on the mythical island of KHAKIKOTONGA (cocky-co-tone-ga), on the eve of the Khatongian Equinox Bash, a Mardi Gras, type celebration and is an annual event and the largest festival of the year. The bash, scheduled to climax with the arranged marriage of the young daughter of the village aristocrat, but this wedding is not to be. The beautiful girl, Bougainvillea, is in love with a commoner, and feigns an imaginary illness that has rendered her speechless, in order to avoid the wedding. The hero of the day will be the doctor who can cure the girl and save the village. Enter "De Obeah Mon" who is not a witch doctor, but a reluctant Medical Doctor trained on the ‘mainland,’ who chooses to live his life out as a rum- drinking, but very loveable cad on this mystical island. This has left his wife and family frustrated. In his travels, he meets a nursemaid with double allegiance and the promise of secret and imminent love.
As a theatrical vehicle, "DE OBEAH MON" incorporates romance and love, magic and mystery, a carnival of costumes and lights, and good old-fashioned fun! The play, although a farce, presents a positive image to the ethnic community, the moral of the story concerning self-image and truth. Each element wrapped in a joyful ribbon of song- from calypso, reggae and jazz to rhythm & blues and a taste of down home gospel. Show stopping production numbers, Caribbean costumes and colorful sets complete the picture. “DE OBEAH MON" is the winner of 10 NAACP ‘Theater Award’ nominations and received six of the trophies including “Best Musical”. The play abounds with never ending fun, farce and fantasy, and of course... everyone (in beautiful costumed disguises), lives happily ever after!
